RC meets sports: UTSB’s upcoming marquee events

Established in 2011, the University of Toronto Sports and Business Association (UTSB) has become an integral part of the U of T community, providing a platform that bridges students with connections in the sports industry. Currently led by co-presidents Richter Heintz (BCom ‘25) and Pierre-Louis Bruneau (BCom ‘26), UTSB’s members span across all three campuses and different programs, with the majority being Rotman Commerce students. Over the years, UTSB has become the largest student-run association within the sports business in Canada, helping to set the foundation for students’ careers in this industry.

“UTSB has helped expand my network and credibility among industry professionals. My involvement with the association has deepened my understanding of the sports industry’s vast reach. ”

“Sports today involve more than traditional sports-focused companies; they intersect with finance, telecom, FMCG, and many other sectors. This diversity opens doors to vast career possibilities—from partnerships in banking to strategic roles in tech and consumer goods—highlighting that the sports industry participates in a rich landscape.”

Pierre-Louis Bruneau (BCom ‘26)

Marquee events

UTSB hosts its annual Sports Industry Night, with this year’s event taking place next week. Additionally, they organize the Toronto Sports Industry Conference, both offering opportunities for career development and in-depth discussions on the sports industry. These events unite students, faculty, alums and professionals from organizations across the GTA and North America. Past notable speakers have included high-profile industry leaders from TFC, Toronto Blue Jays, Toronto Maple Leafs and TSN.

The panels at UTSB’s marquee events cover vital topics shaping the sports industry. “Fast Track: Leveraging Sports for Commercial Success” explores how companies benefit from sports through consumer engagement, marketing and new revenue streams. “Beyond the Game: Strategic Alliances in Sports Partnerships” delves into building and sustaining successful sports-business partnerships while addressing evolving market trends. Lastly, “Game Changers: The Evolving World of Sports Media” examines how media influences fan engagement and sponsorships, highlighting the growing role of storytelling in shaping the future of sports as a business.
