Second-Year Learning Communities (SLC)

Welcome to the Second-Year Learning Community (SLC) designed just for you! 🌟

The transition to second year can be challenging on several fronts. SLC is here to support you navigate a demanding academic curriculum, better understand your values, create goals (professional, academic, and personal), and learn how to balance extracurricular activities – all while ensuring you prioritize your health and wellbeing!

You will meet bi-weekly (6 times in the Fall, 6 times in the Winter) with a small group of second year students led by two upper-year peer mentors to navigate second year together.

Similar to the First Year Learning Community (FLC) program, you will create tight bonds with other Year 2 students and receive guidance from upper year mentors.

Every other week you will meet with your SLC group for 60-90 minutes to foster friendships, develop new skills, and work towards your goals.

Get ready to tackle challenges head-on and capitalize on opportunities for growth. Here’s what you can look forward to:

  • Personal Success Strategies:
    • Identify and overcome challenges like balancing extracurriculars and academics.
    • Develop practical plans for managing time effectively.
    • Create a personalized Individual Development Plan
  • Growth Mindset Training:
    • Learn to turn disappointments into stepping stones for success.
    • Cultivate a self-motivated, exploratory mindset for both academics and career goals.
  • Career Development Initiatives:
    • Shape your individual career plan and take the first steps to make it happen.
    • Practice professional behaviors expected in our supportive community.
  • Cultural Sensitivity:
    • Gain a deeper understanding of various cultural perspectives.
    • Embrace diversity to thrive in our inclusive environment.
  • Academic Skills Boost:
    • Hone essential skills such as presentation, writing, and technical/quantitative skills.
    • Get the tools you need to excel in your studies.
  • Unlock the Potential of Your BCom Degree:
    • Discover the wide array of options your BCom degree offers.
    • See how it aligns with your larger life goals.
  • Build a Supportive Community:
    • Forge meaningful connections with your peers.
    • Create a vibrant and inclusive community to support each other.

For anyone entering second year in 2025-26, simply complete the registration form by April 30, 2025 to secure your spot! Sign up before the deadline so the appropriate number of SLC Mentors are recruited.
