Pre-Departure

Pre-Departure and Arrival Preparation

Before going abroad, there are a few key steps to complete to ensure your courses are eligible for U of T credit and that you’re fully prepared for your exchange experience.

The diagram below outlines the course assessment process—from applying for exchange to having your courses approved by Rotman Commerce and submitted to the Transfer Credit Office.

General Exchange Support

The Learning Abroad Office (Centre for International Experience) is your first point of contact for general exchange guidance. They provide support with nominations, contacting your host institution, visa documentation, and other pre-departure requirements.

Access their full pre-departure checklist here:

What to expect pre-departure:

  1. Submit your application through the Centre for International Experience.
  2. Receive your nomination letter if selected for exchange.
  3. Submit the Course Pre-Assessment Request Form to Rotman Commerce Academic Services.
  4. Wait for Rotman Commerce to complete your course assessment, which they’ll send to both you and the Transfer Credit Office.

Once these steps are complete, you’ll have clarity on how your exchange courses align with U of T’s credit requirements.

Safety Abroad

By helping you understand and mitigate potential risks, U of T Safety Abroad is committed to supporting safe, well-informed student travel. All students participating in university-related travel are required to complete safety requirements prior to departure.

Host Institution Support

Your host institution’s inbound office is a helpful resource once you’re accepted. They can assist you with:

  • Course registration process at the host university
  • Obtaining updated syllabi for your Course Pre-Assessment Request
  • General support for incoming exchange students, including orientation and housing guidance

Before you go abroad, you need to get your courses approved so you can earn U of T credit for them.

Here’s how it works:

  1. Check how transfer credits work
Read the guidelines so you understand what kind of courses can count toward your degree.
  2. Choose your courses
Look at the courses offered by your host school.
  3. Get approval for each course
    • For Rotman (RSM) courses → Fill out the Course Pre-Assessment Request Form
    • For non-RSM courses → Check if they’ve already been approved on Transfer Explorer
  4. Need a new course approved?
    • If it’s not on the list, you’ll need to get it assessed.
    • For non-RSM theme courses, email the Transfer Credit Office to find out who to contact.

Once these steps are done, you’ll know which courses are approved for U of T credit.
