Students admitted into First-Year Commerce have a set of requirements that must completed to continue into second year. These guaranteed admission (GA) requirements are in place to ensure that all of our students have the necessary academic foundation to succeed in our upper-year courses.
The criteria to meet the GA requirements are:
Complete RSM100H1 Introduction to Management with a mark of at least 67%.
Complete ECO101H1 Principles of Microeconomics and ECO102H1 Principles of Macroeconomics each with a mark of at least 63%. Students are not able to average the marks between the two. Note that ECO101H1 is a prerequisite for ECO102H1, so it is necessary to complete ECO101H1 first.
Complete MAT133Y1, Calculus and Linear Algebra for Commerce with a mark of at least 63%, or
MAT135H1 with a final mark of at least 60% AND MAT136H1 with a final mark of at least 60%, or
MAT137Y1 with a final mark of at least 55%, or
MAT157Y1 with a final mark of at least 55%.
Note: Students interested in pursuing a minor or major in other programs, such as Math, Actuarial Science, Computer Science, or Statistics may be required to complete MAT135H1 + MAT136H1 or MAT137Y1. Refer to the Arts & Science Academic Calendar for details.
Earn a minimum of 4.0 full-course equivalents (FCEs).
On-Admission transfer credits can be used for these requirements. For the required courses, only directly equivalent transfer credits will acceptable. For example, a generic MAT1** credit cannot be used in place of MAT133Y1. However, a transfer credit that is explicitly equivalent to MAT133Y1 would enable a student to not take a required math course. You can learn more about transfer credits here.
Post-Admission transfer credits can be used for these requirements under certain circumstances. Please book an appointment with your academic advisor if you are considering this option.
Guaranteed Admission Requirements must be completed by the end of the first-year summer session. Failure to meet any of these requirements will prevent continuation into second year. Note that none of the required courses may be completed using the Credit/No Credit option.
Students may repeat each of the required courses once in order to obtain the necessary marks. Repeated courses must be completed by the end of the summer session. Note that any repeated courses that were passed but not sufficient for the GA requirements (for example, getting a 57% in ECO101H1) will be considered ‘extra (EXT)’ the second time. Extra courses do not reward credit, nor do they count toward GPA.
Students admitted to part-time study will be assessed for entry into Rotman Commerce once they have completed 4.0 credits. These credits must include the courses and marks indicated above.
Students must enrol in a part-time course load from the beginning of each session until they have completed their GA requirements in order to be assessed with the part-time requirements.
Request for Extension of Rotman Commerce Guarantee
If a student does not meet their GA requirements, it is possible to request that Rotman Commerce consider extending the time permitted to complete missing requirements. Such requests will typically be granted under the circumstances that the student faced unexpected or significant challenges to their academics in their first year. Students can request the form to initiate this process, as well as advice on how to prepare their request, from their Rotman Commerce Academic Advisor.
