First-Year Course Enrolment

Course enrolment in your first year can be a bit overwhelming and confusing. Below you’ll find information that we hope will help clarify the process – but if after reading through this page, you still have questions, please don’t hesitate to contact us at rotmancommerce.info@utoronto.ca.

First-Year Required Courses

First Year (Y1) Rotman Commerce students commencing their studies in September will be pre-enroled into the required courses for the Guaranteed Admission:

  • RSM100H – Introduction to Management
  • ECO101H – Principles of Microeconomics
  • ECO102H – Principles of Macroeconomics
  • MAT133Y – Calculus and Linear Algebra for Commerce

Students who prefer to take a higher level math course, such as MAT135H + MAT136H or MAT137Y or MAT157Y, will be able to enrol in those courses as well as drop MAT133Y on ACORN once their enrolment window opens. Detailed instructions on enrolling in courses on ACORN will be emailed in July.

First-Year Recommended Courses

First Year Rotman Commerce students will also be pre-enroled into first year designated sections of the recommended 200-level RSM courses listed below:

The three 200-level RSM courses are recommended as they will allow Y1 Rotman Commerce students to gain an in-depth understanding of Accounting, Finance and Marketing. This will help inform their decision making when they choose their Specialist for second year. These courses are not required to progress into second year at Rotman Commerce as students need only to meet the Guaranteed Admission Requirements.

Students should refer to the 200-Level Courses for First-Year Students resource page for the most recent time table information.

If students are unable to complete some or all of the recommended 200-level RSM courses by the end of first year, they will still be able to complete them in second year and graduate within 4 years. In these cases, students should speak with their Rotman Commerce Academic Advisor to create an effective upper year course selection plan. More information about making an appointment with an Academic Advisor will be communicated via email in July.

Course Enrolment Process

Newly admitted Y1 Rotman Commerce students do not need to enrol in the required or recommended courses listed above as they will be automatically pre-enroled. They will need to enrol only in non-Rotman Commerce electives and/or a higher level math if that is preferred.

As of June 9th, all Arts and Science students at U of T, including Rotman Commerce students, are able to add courses to their cart on ACORN and start planning their course schedule in preparation for Y1 course enrolment, which opens on July 27th for Y1 students (see instructions here: http://help.acorn.utoronto.ca/how-to/). Note that course enrolment windows are set by the Faculty of Arts & Science and cannot be changed.

Y1 Rotman Commerce students will not need to add the required or recommended courses listed above to their cart or plan out their schedule as Rotman Commerce will pre-enrol students before their enrolment window opens on ACORN. This will ensure that all Y1 students can get into sections for all of their required and recommended courses without any scheduling conflicts.

When the course enrolment window opens, Y1 Rotman Commerce students will need to enrol only in electives and/or a higher level math if that is preferred. Consequently, it is advisable to select a variety of elective course sections and times so students have options when their enrolment starts on July 27th. At this point, students may also drop and change sections of the required and recommended courses in which they have been pre-enroled, should it be necessary.

Rotman Commerce will pre-enrol half of the Y1 class into RSM100H1 + RSM219H1 in the Fall term and RSM230H1 + RSM250H1 in the Winter term. The other half of the class will be enroled in RSM100H1 + RSM250H1 in the Fall term and RSM230H1 + RSM219H1 in the Winter term. The course content will be tailored towards first year students. They will also be pre-enroled in ECO101H1 and ECO102H1 and MAT133Y1 which are full year courses that span both Fall and Winter terms.

Sample List of Courses in Fall 2017:

  • RSM100H – 2hrs
  • RSM219H – 3hrs
  • ECO101H – 3hrs
  • MAT133Y – 4hrs
  • Arts and Science Elective – 2 to 3hrs

Total (in general) – 15 hours of lectures and tutorials

Sample List of Courses in Winter 2018:

  • RSM230H – 2hrs
  • RSM250H – 2hrs
  • ECO102H – 3hrs
  • MAT133Y – 4hrs
  • Arts and Science Elective – 2 to 3hrs

Total (in general) – 15 hours of lectures and tutorials

Y1 students will not be allowed to take RSM100H1 + RSM219H1 + RSM250H1 simultaneously in the Fall term as this would result in a very demanding work load early on for new students.

Students will be allowed to change sections of any of fall/winter courses on ACORN during assigned course enrolment time and up until the last day to add a course, pending space. They will be allowed to drop courses up until the drop deadline, though, students must still meet the Guaranteed Admission Requirements within the required timelines. Please seehttp://calendar.artsci.utoronto.ca/Sessional_Dates.html for course add and drop deadlines.

NOTE: Students in One programs (VicOne, TrinOne, etc), will have a different pre-enrolment plan. Rotman Commerce will contact students in these programs in July to discuss courses and schedules.

Elective Courses

As Y1 Rotman Commerce students will be pre-enroled in 4.0 full credits, they will have space to take 1.0 more credit (1 full credit or 2 half credits), allowing for Arts and Science electives. Please speak to your College Registrar if you are looking for advice on which electives to take.
