{"id":8123,"date":"2026-01-20T20:38:08","date_gmt":"2026-01-20T20:38:08","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/rotmancommerce.utoronto.ca\/current-students\/?page_id=8123"},"modified":"2026-06-16T19:07:32","modified_gmt":"2026-06-16T19:07:32","slug":"prerequisite-and-deferred-exam-policies","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/rotmancommerce.utoronto.ca\/current-students\/choosing-your-courses\/prerequisite-and-deferred-exam-policies\/","title":{"rendered":"Prerequisites, Deferred Exams, and Attendance Policy for RSM Courses"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"block-wrapper block-wrapper-heading\">\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><\/h2>\n<\/div>\n\n<div class=\"block-wrapper block-wrapper-paragraph\">\n<p>Rotman Commerce requires that&nbsp;all prerequisites and corequisites be completed<strong>&nbsp;<\/strong>as outlined in the<strong>&nbsp;<\/strong><a href=\"https:\/\/artsci.calendar.utoronto.ca\/section\/Rotman-Commerce\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Academic Calendar<\/a><strong>&nbsp;<\/strong>in order to&nbsp;enrol in RSM courses.&nbsp;Please refer to the <a href=\"https:\/\/rotmancommerce.utoronto.ca\/current-students\/choosing-your-courses\/special-topics-courses\/\">RC website<\/a> for prerequisite information for Special Topics courses.&nbsp;These requirements are&nbsp;<strong>strictly enforced<\/strong>&nbsp;to ensure students are adequately prepared for course content.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n<div class=\"block-wrapper block-wrapper-paragraph\">\n<p><strong>Please note:<\/strong>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n<div class=\"block-wrapper block-wrapper-list\">\n<ul>\n<li>Although ACORN may allow you to enrol&nbsp;in a course without the required prerequisite(s) or corequisite(s), this does not confirm your eligibility to remain enrolled. Prerequisite and corequisite reviews are conducted by the Rotman Commerce Program Office, not ACORN.&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Students who enrol without meeting the required prerequisite(s) and\/or corequisite(s) will be removed from the course once eligibility checks are completed. Reviews occur on an ongoing basis throughout the enrolment period.&nbsp;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div>\n\n<div class=\"block-wrapper block-wrapper-paragraph\">\n<p>To avoid enrolment issues, review the course description in the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/artsci.calendar.utoronto.ca\/section\/Rotman-Commerce\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Academic Calendar<\/a>&nbsp;carefully to confirm you meet all requirements before enrolling.<strong>&nbsp;<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n<div class=\"block-wrapper block-wrapper-heading\">\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Deferred Exams (SDF)&nbsp;and Prerequisite Enrolment<\/strong>&nbsp;<\/h2>\n<\/div>\n\n<div class=\"block-wrapper block-wrapper-paragraph\">\n<p>The following guidelines apply to students&nbsp;seeking&nbsp;to enrol in a course while awaiting the completion of a deferred exam in a prerequisite course:&nbsp;<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n<div class=\"block-wrapper block-wrapper-list\">\n<ul>\n<li>Students who do not have an approved petition to write a deferred exam are not&nbsp;permitted&nbsp;to enrol in a course that requires that prerequisite and will be removed by the&nbsp;Rotman Commerce&nbsp;Program Office.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>If your petition has been approved and your grade in the prerequisite course is recorded as&nbsp;SDF,&nbsp;you may be&nbsp;permitted&nbsp;to enrol&nbsp;provided that&nbsp;<strong>both<\/strong>&nbsp;of the following conditions are met:&nbsp;<div class=\"block-wrapper block-wrapper-list\">\n<ul>\n<li>Your term-work average in the prerequisite course (excluding the deferred exam) is at least 50%; and&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>You have completed at least\u00a060% of the course deliverables (e.g., quizzes,\u00a0cases,\u00a0midterms, participation,\u00a0etc).\u00a0<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div>\n\n<div class=\"block-wrapper block-wrapper-paragraph\">\n<p><\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n<div class=\"block-wrapper block-wrapper-paragraph\">\n<p><\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n<div class=\"block-wrapper block-wrapper-columns\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-columns is-layout-flex wp-container-core-columns-is-layout-1 wp-block-columns-is-layout-flex\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-column has-background is-layout-flow wp-block-column-is-layout-flow\" style=\"background-color:#3e77b824\"><div class=\"block-wrapper block-wrapper-heading\">\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Important Note:<\/strong>&nbsp;<\/h3>\n<\/div>\n\n<div class=\"block-wrapper block-wrapper-paragraph\">\n<p>An SDF notation may temporarily allow a course to be used toward prerequisite requirements (subject to the 50\/60 rule above), but it&nbsp;<strong>cannot<\/strong>&nbsp;be used to satisfy program&nbsp;entry requirements. For example, first-year courses&nbsp;required&nbsp;for&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/rotmancommerce.utoronto.ca\/current-students\/welcome-to-first-year\/guaranteed-admission\/\">Guaranteed Admission<\/a>&nbsp;must be fully completed&nbsp;with a final&nbsp;grade.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n<div class=\"block-wrapper block-wrapper-paragraph\">\n<p>If you have any questions or concerns&nbsp;related to prerequisites, please contact a&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/rotmancommerce.utoronto.ca\/current-students\/academic-support\/academic-advising\/\">Rotman&nbsp;Commerce&nbsp;Academic Advisor<\/a><strong>&nbsp;<\/strong>for guidance.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n<div class=\"block-wrapper block-wrapper-heading\">\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Rotman Commerce attendance policy<\/h2>\n<\/div>\n\n<div class=\"block-wrapper block-wrapper-paragraph\">\n<p>Rotman Commerce students are expected to make every effort to attend each class. Infrequently, students may miss term work, e.g., quizzes, assignments, etc., due to unplanned and extenuating circumstances and must follow the Request for Special Consideration process as outlined in their course outlines.&nbsp;
