Arriving in Canada: what to do your first day, week and month
To help you settle in smoothly, here’s a guide for what to focus on during your first day, first week, and first month here at U of T.
Your first day
Start by taking care of the essentials that will help you feel comfortable and connected.
- Look for the U of T Airport Welcome booth when you land at Toronto Pearson International Airport.
- Check in to your residence or housing. Make sure you have your keys, Wi-Fi access, and understand the building rules.
- Buy essentials. Pick up bedding, toiletries, and groceries.
- Connect to Wi-Fi and set up email. Log in to your UTmail+ account and the campus Wi-Fi to stay informed about university updates.
- Sign up for important campus messages with the UAlert app. UAlert will notify you of things like campus closures, safety issues, and weather-related incidents.
- Come say hi at the Rotman Commerce Front Desk in OISE! This is the place to ask questions, get directions or get a helping hand. Directions can be found on the contact page.
Your first week
Once you’ve settled in, use your first week to get organized and start meeting people.
- Get your TCard (student ID). You can use it for building access, the library, and transit discounts.
- Explore the U of T campus. Visit the St. George campus map online to find key locations like libraries, dining halls, and study spaces. Locate your classrooms and lecture halls before classes start.
- Set up a Canadian bank account. Most major banks offer student accounts with no fees. Bring your passport, study permit, and proof of enrollment.
- Get a SIM card or phone plan. Reliable communication will make daily life easier.
- Learn about your health care options.
- UHIP (University Health Insurance Plan) is mandatory for international students.
- You can also visit the Health & Wellness Centre to learn about mental health and medical services.
- Familiarize yourself with transportation. Get a PRESTO card for buses, trains, streetcars, and the subway. View our full transit resource here.
Your first month
After the first few weeks, focus on building connections and finding balance in your new environment.
- Attend club fairs and student events. Rotman Commerce and U of T have hundreds of student groups you can join.
- Meet with an academic advisor. They can help you understand your program requirements and course options.
- Explore Toronto. Visit areas like Kensignton Market, the Distillery District, and High Park to experience local food, nature and culture.
- Review your finances. Create a monthly budget for rent, food, transportation, and entertainment.
- First-year students are automatically enrolled in the First Year Learning Communities program. Make sure to attend FLC meetings and events to level up your first semester!
- Get involved in Rotman Commerce student life. Consider signing up for a RCSL student buddy during orientation. View all events in RC Portal.
