Transfer Credits and Letter of Permission
Students can apply for a Letter of Permission to receive transfer credits by taking courses at another institution within Canada. Please see information for this process on the Transfer Credit Office website, including eligibility guidelines, and the application deadlines for each session.
A Letter of Permission (LOP) allows students to receive a course assessment before enrolling in a course at another Canadian institution. An approved Letter of Permission is required in order to register at a Canadian host institution and to be considered for transfer credit upon successful completion of the course.
Rotman Commerce students who are not participating in the University of Toronto Exchange Program may apply for a Letter of Permission only for courses that are not core requirements of the Rotman Commerce program.
Note: Letters of Permission for transfer credit will not be granted if an equivalent course is being offered in the Faculty of Arts & Science in the same session.
Approved Letter of Permission transfer credits may be used toward elective requirements within a student’s degree or program.
The following RSM courses are not eligible for transfer credit:
| Core Courses for all RC Students | RSM100H; RSM219H; RSM222H; RSM230H; RSM250H; RSM260H; RSM270H; RSM332H; RSM333H; RSM392H |
| Accounting Specialist | RSM220H1; RSM221H1; RSM225H1; RSM320H1; RSM321H1; RSM323H1; RSM324H1; RSM326H1; RSM420H1; RSM422H1; RSM424H1; RSM426H1 |

| Management Specialist | Limit of 1.0 transfer credit at the 300+ level – see the BCom degree requirement listed below. |
A&S degree requirement and restriction: No more than 1.0 credit at the 300+ level in transfer credit may be counted towards the minimum number of 300- and 400-level credits, except transfer credits attained through a University of Toronto exchange program.
First-Year Transfer Credits for Guaranteed Admission
Rotman Commerce accepts transfer credits from other universities that are deemed equivalent to the first-year requirements in economics (ECO101H1 and ECO102H1) and mathematics (MAT133Y1 or MAT135H1 and MAT136H1). Please note that RSM100H1 is not eligible for transfer credit.
Important Note: Letters of Permission for transfer credit will not be granted if an equivalent course is being offered in the Faculty of Arts & Science in the same session. As ECO and MAT courses are available at the University of Toronto during the Summer Session, LOPs for these courses are unlikely to be granted. Students are expected to complete their GA requirements at U of T during the Summer Session.
Rotman Commerce also strongly encourages students to complete their first-year requirements at the University of Toronto, St. George campus for the following reasons:
- Courses are specifically tailored to the Commerce program and provide a strong foundation for upper-year economics requirements.
- Students benefit from the Repeating a Passed Course policy, where the higher grade of a repeated passed course counts toward your GPA and the lower grade is recorded as an Extra. This benefit is not available if a course is repeated at another institution.
Please refer to the Transfer Credit Office website for more information on Letter of Permission, including eligibility requirements, application procedures, and important deadlines.
If you have questions or would like to discuss your options, please book an appointment with a Rotman Commerce academic advisor.
