Students, faculty, colleagues and family members surprised Professor Amernic with a retirement celebration after his last lecture at Rotman Commerce.

As Professor Joel Amernic prepares to retire, the Rotman community celebrates a remarkable career that has shaped the lives of countless students, colleagues, and friends. For more than 50 years, Professor Amernic has been a cornerstone of the accounting area, admired for his deep expertise, his unwavering kindness, and his genuine care for everyone he teaches.

Joel joined the University of Toronto in the early 1970s and has since devoted his career to examining how accounting intersects with leadership, ethics, and the language of business. His teaching has reminded generations of students that accounting is not merely about numbers; it is about people, decisions, and responsibility.

Joel’s extraordinary tenure represents half of Rotman Commerce’s 104-year history, underscoring the depth and longevity of his contribution to the program. Over the decades, he has published extensively, authored or co-authored ten books, and received national recognition, including the Canadian Academic Accounting Association’s Outstanding Educator Award. Yet what truly distinguishes his legacy is the transformational impact he has had in the classroom, where his passion for learning and his commitment to fostering open, critical thinking have inspired thousands.

Joel once shared a message that continues to resonate: “Be resilient and be honourable. Regard everyone, young or old, whatever their background or status, as a fellow human being and respect the views of everyone you meet.”

As he steps into retirement, we thank Professor Amernic for his leadership, mentorship, and the legacy of curiosity and compassion he leaves behind. His influence will continue to live on in the minds and hearts of those who had the privilege to learn from him.

Reflections from our community

Looking back on Professor Amernic’s time at Rotman, it is clear that his greatest impact lives on through the people he taught and worked alongside. Below are a few reflections from those who had the privilege to learn from him, collaborate with him, and grow under his guidance.

Working with Professor Amernic over the years has been one of the most rewarding parts of my academic journey. He epitomizes the true meaning of working as a team and fostering collaboration amongst coworkers. In the classroom, students always comment on how they love his teaching style and passion for student learning. His curriculum is engaging and at the cutting edge of what is happening in the accounting world. Students see the relevance of what is being discussed and how it ties back to the real world. He has inspired me to do the same. I am grateful to have learned from and worked with Professor Amernic and for his guidance and support.

Professor Ralph Tassone

I’ve been told that I “don’t look like your average Rotman Commerce student,” in reference to my heavily tattooed arms and my bright outfits and makeup. When Professor Amernic first saw my tattoos, however, he simply said “your tattoos are awesome!”, winning me over as his student for life. Professor Amernic’s welcoming spirit is just one part of what makes him an exceptional educator. His clarity, patience, and commitment to student success created an engaging learning environment. Every lecture felt like a genuine opportunity for us to grow and excel. I’m truly grateful to have learned from such a dedicated and insightful professor.
